December is a month full of lists and "Best of"s on Faster, Leonard Cohen, Die! Die!. As it turned out, I had trouble putting things in specific order, but it gave me a chance to look back on the last decade in Canadian music.

On the December 10th episode, I took a look at the best releases of the last decade from my home town of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Whether you're from Saskatoon or not, I highly recommend checking out all of these great artists. Here's the playlist from the show (in no particular order):

1. It Don't Bother Me - The Fjords (The Fjords, 2003)
2. Street Rain - Ride Til Dawn (Hearts of Worlds Forgotten, 2009)
3. Favours for Favours - Maybe Smith (Second Best Death, 2006)
4. It Goes - soso (Birthday Songs, 2002)
5. Come Down - Vicious Crystals (Vicious Crystals, 2007)
6. Class Action Lawsuit - Junior Pantherz (Death by Life, 2005)

9. Terraform Mars - Carbon Dating Service (Reliquae, 2009)
10. Nancy - Deep Dark Woods (Winter Hours, 2009)

This is not a comprehensive list by any means. There were many albums I didn't have time to play on the show.

Last week's episode was a two-hour special edition of Faster, Leonard Cohen, Die! Die!, featuring a bunch of great songs from what I consider the best Canadian albums of the year 2000s. Though I counted down the top 10, the other 40 were played in no particular order. I was having too many fights with myself trying to number everything. Who needs stupid lists anyways? PS: on next week's show, I've got another list! It's the top 10 Canadian albums of 2009!

First, here's the playlist from the two-hour special:

1. Montreal -40C - Malajube

Thanks for having a look at what I think is great, though I'm still mentally adding more albums to the list. Remember to tune in next Thursday to hear my Top 10 Canadian Albums of 2009! Thanks for listening, and don't take my lists as anything but my own personal opinion on music. There's just so much great Canadian music out there, it's impossible to listen to it all, especially to include on a Best-of or Favourite list like this. Enjoy!

Faster Leonard is back in the blogosphere!

After a blogging hiatus, I am back with some info on upcoming episodes of Faster, Leonard Cohen, Die! Die!.

In the month of December, I will be counting down a variety of year-end lists, including my top Canadian picks of 2009, top local Saskatoon, SK picks of the past decade, and a big list of the top 50 Canadian albums of the 2000s!

I'll also be featuring picks from notable local and Canadian musicians & music critics. More info on that to come!

As I sift through the many great Canadian albums, I find myself with a renewed sense of pride towards our homegrown musical talent. Many of these albums will surely appear on best-of-the-decade lists all over the world, not just at home.

Feel free to post your own Canadian best-of lists here at the Faster Leonard blog.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you come back soon.

Episode 34 - Leonard, Lightfoot & Other Legends

I was lucky enough to attend the Leonard Cohen show this past week in Saskatoon, so I thought I’d solidify the fact that I, indeed, do not hate Mr. Cohen by starting the show off with an all-Leonard set. I continued the episode with a selection of other legends of Canadian music.

Here’s the playlist:

Episode 35 - Heavy as a Fairly Heavy Thing

With the release of a documentary on Canadian metal monsters Anvil and the reissue of classic canuck album "Keep the Dogs Away" by Thor, I decided to play some bangin' heavy Canadian music this week. Though it might not have been as heavy as the show that follows mine (Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing) on CFCR, it was pretty meaty, if I do say so myself.

Here's the playlist:

1. Rock & Roll - Cripple Creek Fairies
2. Turn you out - Bionic
3. Lay Down - Priestess
4. Psychotic Retraction - C’mon
5. White Witch Woman Blues - Pride Tiger
6. Wucan - Black Mountain
7. The Switch - The New Jacobin Club*
8. Big Sleep - Golden Smoke*
9. I don’t need it - The Warbrides*
10. Bison Eyes - Quest for Fire
11. School Love - Anvil
12. Keep the Dogs Away - Thor

Billy Bob can have his gravy. And stuff it too.

Most of you will be aware of Billy Bob Thornton's ridiculously childish tirade on live CBC radio last week (if you haven't seen it, click here).

BBT didn't want to talk about movies. Fine. However, there is almost no way anyone would have heard/heard of/give a rat's ass about this band if it didn't contain a certain jackass that people know from movies. If he doesn't realise that, or has somehow convinced himself that such is the case, it just furthers the idea that he is not quite right in his thinking parts. And really, (CBC host) Jian Ghomeshi, who, by the way, handled himself like a pro, didn't really ASK him much about being an actor. He merely put into context the sole reason for this band to be on his show.

The suggestion that The Boxmasters are registering some sort of exciting new sound to the rabid masses is a complete farce, what with it having been done for decades. And sure, there's something to be said for revivalism in music, but who does (enter prefix here)billy music better than The Sadies? They have been doing this for over a decade. Now, where do those boys come from? Hmmmm.. Oh right. Canada.

How's that for gravy, Billy Bob?

That's all the ranting I have for now. Tune in next time, when I tear into Fox News for dissing Canada's military. Actually, making fun of Fox News might be redundant in itself. But you wait, I'll find something incendiary that someone said about Canada.. somewhere.
